Robin Taylor Cook is a Denver-based contemporary artist working primarily in acrylic and ink, with occasional oil bar and pastel.

Creativity has been a constant throughout Cook’s life. She earned a BA in Psychology from the University of Puget Sound and a Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis, and practiced psychotherapy before stepping away from her career to raise her two children. During those years, she returned to a lifelong interest in art and, in 2014, began developing an independent painting practice.

What began as a return to something she had loved since childhood gradually became a serious and evolving body of work. Her background and life experiences continue to inform her perspective as an artist, as does an awareness of how quickly life changes and time passes. That awareness has strengthened her appreciation for beauty, humor, connection, and the importance of remaining engaged with the world around her.

Cook’s paintings have been exhibited and collected throughout the United States and internationally and are held in private and commercial collections.

She lives and works in Denver, Colorado.

“My work exists somewhere between abstraction and representation. I often begin without a predetermined destination, allowing color, line, shape, and recognizable forms to develop intuitively as the painting evolves.

​

I work primarily in acrylic and ink, occasionally incorporating oil bar and pastel. Color is central to my visual language, as are transparency, layered marks, and the tension created when something familiar emerges within an otherwise abstract composition. Nature frequently finds its way into the work, including flowers, birds, animals, leaves, and organic forms, but these subjects are often less about representation than they are vehicles for something more personal.

Increasingly, painting has become a way for me to process experience. Some works grow from memories or moments of joy; others develop as I work through change, uncertainty, loss, or the complexities of a particular season of life. I don’t necessarily set out to illustrate those experiences. Instead, they influence the choices I make: the colors I reach for, the marks I leave exposed, what I obscure, and what I allow to emerge.

I am interested in the coexistence of seemingly opposing things: abstraction and recognition, seriousness and play, vulnerability and humor, beauty and imperfection. I don’t want to determine what a viewer should feel when looking at a painting. The experience I bring to making it may be entirely different from the experience someone else brings to seeing it.

​

Ultimately, I want the work to feel honest and alive, with enough openness for viewers to find their own memories, emotions, and interpretations within it.”
